Whether you are a beginner facilitator or a seasoned presenter looking to sharpen your skills, this workshop is for you. Participants learn strategies for successfully presenting sensitive information about race relations to a wide audience of learners. You will learn tips and techniques to avoid common pitfalls, move from "telling" to "teaching", and ways to address tension to deepen the conversation.

Talking with Children about Race
Friday, May 21st, 2010
8:30 Registration, 9:00 - 4:
30p.m. Workshop
2100 Building
2100 24th Avenue South
Seattle, WA 98144

What do I say when a child claims she doesn't like her skin color? How can I support a child's developing cultural identity? What should I do when a child makes fun of someone because of their race?

Recent research has shown that children have very complex understandings of differences and stereotypes. Far from being color-blind, most children are aware of how their own skin color is an advantage or disadvantage. They also judge their peers based on stereotypes that adults might like to believe they are unaware of. Because of this, it is important that children are given anti-bias messages, through actions and words, to actively counter what they are witnessing in the adult world.

In this workshop we will explore how children learn and practice racism and privilege and strategies for counteracting bias. The facilitators will draw from their diverse experiences to engage parents, teachers, and concerned community members in this vital work for equity.
