June is National Immigrant Heritage, LGBTQ+ Pride, and Caribbean American Heritage Month! We've shared before about these months but this is the first year we are sharing about National Immigrant Heritage Month, which we've added to our Diversity Calendar.
National Immigrant Heritage Month was established in 2022 by President Joe Biden to recognize that we are a nation of immigrants and as an opportunity to share our immigrant stories. The month was started by the organization I Stand with Immigrants/I Am an Immigrant in 2014, an advocacy group that uses narratives to empower immigrants and drive action for change. Watch the video below or visit their Instagram account to read stories from immigrants from around the nation.
Pride Month was started in 1969 with the Stonewall Riots, followed by the first gay pride parade in New York City commemorating the riots in 1970. It was officially recognized in 2009.
Caribbean American Heritage Month was established in 2006 to honor and history and contributions of Caribbean Americans in the U.S. 90% of people of Caribbean heritage originate from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, and Tobago.
You can read more about these two months, as well as resources for celebrating, on our blog!
