Hispanic/Latine/Latinx Heritage Month

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month poster with floral border on navy background and dates 15 September–15 October.

Hispanic/Latine/Latinx Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 each year, a span chosen to align with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all mark their independence on September 15, followed by Mexico on September 16 and Chile on September 18.

The observance was established to recognize the deep and lasting contributions of Latine Americans to U.S. culture, history, and society. This month offers a meaningful opportunity to celebrate that legacy by listening to and amplifying Latine voices. Below are a sampling of ways you can honor this month around the Puget Sound area:

Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias (Sept 19-20, Seattle Center, South Park): free two-day celebration of Latin American independence with a parade, live music, folk dance, and food.

MEXAM NW (through Oct 31, multiple venues): a month-long festival spotlighting contemporary Hispanic and Mexican-American art, with exhibits at UW and downtown Seattle galleries.

Visit El Centro de la Raza: Go on a tour or get involved at this community resource located in Beacon Hill and don't forget to read our interview with Executive Director Estela Ortega.

Support Latine-owned businesses :Visit Intentionalist for a list of Latine owned brick and mortar businesses you can support, as well as learn about the people who run them.
