Advancing DEIBelonging Workshop Date Change

DEIBelonging event details with new date. Text highlights sessions like "Understanding Resistance". Diverse group illustration.

As you know, we distribute our Diversity Calendar to help you plan your events and meetings so they don't coincide with important dates. We use it for our own planning but made the mistake of not checking it when we scheduled our Advancing DEIBelonging workshop series. We should have done better but also know that mistakes do happen so we are making it right by changing the date from June 19th, which is Juneteenth, to Wednesday, June 18th.

  • June 12: Understanding the Political Climate of Resistance

  • June 18: Radical Self-Care and Community Connections

  • June 26: Finding Hope in Uncertain Times

If you haven't had a chance to check out our workshop series yet, learn more by visiting the event page. These sessions offer an opportunity to explore ways we can continue nurturing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in ways that are thoughtful, human-centered, informed, and responsive to the moment.

You can take one, two, or all three at a discount. We hope you’ll join us for this opportunity to reflect, connect, and grow together as a community.

June is National Immigrant Heritage, LGBTQ+ Pride, and Caribbean American Heritage Month

"June is..." Celebrates National Immigrant Heritage, LGBTQ+ Pride, and Caribbean American Heritage Months with illustrations and vibrant colors.

June is National Immigrant Heritage, LGBTQ+ Pride, and Caribbean American Heritage Month! We've shared before about these months but this is the first year we are sharing about National Immigrant Heritage Month, which we've added to our Diversity Calendar.

National Immigrant Heritage Month was established in 2022 by President Joe Biden to recognize that we are a nation of immigrants and as an opportunity to share our immigrant stories. The month was started by the organization I Stand with Immigrants/I Am an Immigrant in 2014, an advocacy group that uses narratives to empower immigrants and drive action for change. Watch the video below or visit their Instagram account to read stories from immigrants from around the nation.

Pride Month was started in 1969 with the Stonewall Riots, followed by the first gay pride parade in New York City commemorating the riots in 1970. It was officially recognized in 2009.

Caribbean American Heritage Month was established in 2006 to honor and history and contributions of Caribbean Americans in the U.S. 90% of people of Caribbean heritage originate from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, and Tobago.

You can read more about these two months, as well as resources for celebrating, on our blog!

This conversation is from an interview Ilsa did with Caprice to help inform her current studies as a doctoral candidate in the Leadership for Learning program at the University of Washington. We have one final clip from this series which we'll share in the next newsletter!

Join The Resistance Lab with Pramila Jayapal

Thanks to our colleague Martha Hurwitz's newsletter, we learned about The Resistance Lab, a series of trainings presented by Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal to help us respond to this moment. Their goal is to:

  • Help people understand how democracies fall and the most effective resistance movements that have challenged authoritarians and dictators.

  • Turn anger, fear and frustration into action in the short-term.

  • Prepare for a coordinated resistance movement for the longer term.

  • Build community across the country that can help grow the movement.

The next one is today, June 1st at 11:00-1:00 pm but they have will have more events. Visit the event page to register.
